Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid), captain of the French national football team, has acknowledged his side's comprehensive defeat after their bid for the 2026 North and Central America World Cup title ended in the semifinals against Spain.
France lost 0-2 to Spain in the tournament's semifinal match held at Dallas Stadium in Texas, USA, on July 15 (KST).
Mbappe, who had led France to the semifinals by scoring 8 goals in the tournament, saw his dream of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final come to an end.
According to the Associated Press, Mbappe told reporters immediately after the match, "We did not play the game we wanted in terms of tactics, technique, and overall performance," adding, "You cannot win if you don't do your job on the stage of a World Cup semifinal."
He continued his analysis, saying, "Spain is superior to us in controlling the game, so our goal was to disrupt their rhythm and prevent them from establishing their characteristic slow and controlled pace through high pressing. Ultimately, we failed in that pressure."
Mbappe specifically pointed to a numerical disadvantage in the midfield as the cause of the defeat.
France paired Adrien Rabiot and Aurelien Tchouameni in the center of the pitch, but they struggled as they conceded control to the Spanish midfield, which featured Rodri, Dani Olmo, and Fabian Ruiz.
"We were constantly at a 2-on-3 numerical disadvantage in the midfield," Mbappe noted. "Against Spain, that is a fatal problem. In the end, all these factors combined to produce the painful result of a defeat."
While unable to hide his disappointment as his tournament run came to an end, Mbappe vowed to bounce back in the future.
"It was my dream to reach the final and give the people a historic moment," Mbappe said. "The entire squad is currently feeling a disappointment that cannot be expressed in words."
However, he added, "Just as you hold your head high when you win, you must also hold your head high when you lose. Football does not stop, so we will use this failure as a lesson and start again."
