The Minimum Wage Commission has issued a recommendation for the government to develop measures to improve the minimum wage system.
During the 14th plenary session of the Minimum Wage Commission held today (July 14), public interest members cited the rejection of proposals such as the minimum wage for piece-rate work during this year's discussions. They released a recommendation stating, "In an era where the overall economic and social landscape is rapidly changing due to the spread of AI and the growth of platform businesses, institutional improvements are necessary to make progress in minimum wage discussions."
This year, the Minimum Wage Commission held discussions on applying a piece-rate minimum wage, which would set a minimum payment per service unit for special employment workers and platform workers, such as delivery riders and designated drivers.
However, after deliberation, the piece-rate minimum wage proposal was rejected with 11 votes in favor and 15 against.
The differential application of the minimum wage by industry, which had been requested by the business sector, was also rejected with 11 votes in favor and 14 against.
In their recommendation, the public interest members of the Minimum Wage Commission urged the government to "establish an institutional improvement task force under the Ministry of Employment and Labor in the second half of this year to prepare comprehensive improvement measures." They further requested that the government "prepare so that the results can be utilized in future minimum wage deliberations."
