Teenage siblings who secretly drugged their father with sleeping pills and used his phone to take out tens of millions of won in loans have been sent to trial.
Initially, the police referred only the older sister's boyfriend to the prosecution on fraud charges, but the prosecution confirmed the siblings' complicity through supplementary investigations.
According to legal circles on July 14, the Criminal Division 1 of the Ulsan District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Lee Ho-seok) indicted the older sister, referred to as A, and her boyfriend, B, without detention on charges of robbery and computer fraud on June 22.
The younger brother of A was also referred to the juvenile division of the court on the same charges.
In 2024, they mixed sleeping pills into coffee and gave it to their father (in his 40s). After he fell asleep, they used his mobile phone to take out approximately 30 million won in bank loans and withdrew a total of about 40 million won from his account to purchase gold.
It was revealed that they subsequently sold the gold at a jewelry store to obtain cash, which they used for expenses such as skincare treatments.
The crime was discovered when the father woke up, realized his children were missing, and filed a missing person report.
The police located the siblings and the boyfriend, B, within one day and investigated them. However, they only referred B to the prosecution, applying charges of computer fraud for taking out the loans using the father's phone.
Although B confessed to A's use of sleeping pills during the police investigation, the case was closed without further inquiry after A claimed she had not participated in the crime and her younger brother stated that his sister was not involved.
However, the prosecution confirmed the siblings' complicity through supplementary investigations in November of last year.
When the siblings and the boyfriend were confronted during a face-to-face investigation, the siblings confessed, saying, "We ground up sleeping pills prescribed at a hospital and mixed them into our father's coffee."
The prosecution determined that A's act of drugging her father to render him unable to resist and then stealing his phone to take out loans constituted robbery, and subsequently indicted her along with B.
