A power outage in the Yeongjongdo area of Incheon has affected approximately 25,000 households.

According to Incheon City and the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) on Tuesday (July 14), power supply was cut off in the Yeongjong-dong area of Yeongjong-gu, Incheon, at 5:16 p.m. the previous day.

While the number of households affected was initially estimated at around 2,000, the scale of the damage was later confirmed to be 3,084 units.

A unit (ho) refers to KEPCO's contract unit, and one unit can include an entire apartment complex housing thousands of households.

Consequently, the actual number of households affected by the power outage was tallied at 25,169.

Due to the sudden power failure, 25 residents in apartments and other buildings across Yeongjongdo were trapped in elevators and were rescued by fire authorities.

Among them, two individuals in their 60s complained of back pain, and one was transported to a hospital.

KEPCO determined that the outage was caused by a malfunction in the underground transmission line equipment leading to the Jungsan Substation.

It was reported that one of the two transmission lines failed on July 12, and the backup line also developed issues the following day.

KEPCO established an emergency response center and conducted restoration work, successfully restoring power to 3,003 units (97.4%) by around 10:00 p.m. the previous day, approximately 4 hours and 40 minutes after the outage began. Power was restored to the remaining 81 units at 11:31 p.m.

This is a temporary measure using backup power from other substations.

Therefore, KEPCO explained that there is a possibility of further power outages if electricity usage increases.

"We are working on installing transmission lines to ensure there are no disruptions in power supply," a KEPCO official said. "It will take several days for a full recovery."
