▲ Minister of Gender Equality and Family Won Min-kyung visits the Child Support Agency in Jung-gu, Seoul, on the 9th, urging for the effective implementation of institutional improvements, such as the relaxation of eligibility requirements for advance payments under the amended Act on Securing and Supporting Child Support, which was revised last month.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the Child Support Agency announced that the cumulative amount of child support payments reached 300.2 billion won as of the end of last month.
The annual amount of child support payments has consistently increased since the support program began in 2015, reaching 40.4 billion won in 2018, 111.2 billion won in 2021, and 220 billion won in 2024.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family has been imposing sanctions on those who fail to pay child support to ensure that single parents raising minor children can receive the support they have not yet been paid by the non-custodial parent.
Since July of last year, the government introduced an advance child support payment system, where the state provides up to 200,000 won per month to single-parent families who have not received child support from their former spouses, and later recovers the advance payments from the child support debtors.
Minister of Gender Equality and Family Won Min-kyung stated, "Child support is a fundamental right for the stable growth and livelihood of minor children," adding, "We will continue to improve the child support enforcement system and strengthen cooperation with relevant agencies to ensure that child support payments are made consistently."
