Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo of the People Power Party stated today (July 12) that he "firmly opposes" the return of independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon to the party, amid an ongoing dispute following Ahn's recent court testimony regarding the December 3 martial law declaration.
During a press conference at the National Assembly today, Ahn said, "I appeared as a witness in the trial of Mayor Choo Kyung-ho and testified to the facts I personally heard and confirmed on the night of December 3, 2024." He added, "I heard from those who were gathered at the party headquarters at the time that 'it was Representative Han Dong-hoon who suggested we go to the party headquarters first,' and I later confirmed this to be true through the party's official records."
Ahn continued, "I testified only to the facts, not for anyone's sake, nor to target anyone. Yet, Rep. Han Dong-hoon portrayed me as if I were engaging in distortion and incitement."
Ahn also pointed out, "Rep. Han Dong-hoon himself has been summoned as a witness to the same trial multiple times but has not appeared even once. I urge him to testify in court now to make his claims official."
"It was certainly not Rep. Han Dong-hoon alone who stopped the martial law," Ahn asked, adding, "Why must the history of that day be reduced to a heroic narrative of only one person, Han Dong-hoon?"
He further criticized pro-Han lawmakers, stating, "They have attacked, ridiculed, and denounced a senior member of their own party for testifying to the truth in court. If it is this bad while Rep. Han is outside the party, it is obvious what will happen if he returns."
He concluded, "The entire party will fall into factional conflict and a wasteful civil war. I hope Rep. Han will not even come near our party from now on."
