The Ministry of Justice announced that it plans to launch an open call for correctional facility construction projects next month.
This open call system was designed to overcome issues such as long-term project delays caused by public opposition during the site selection process for correctional facilities.
The Ministry of Justice plans to select target sites by comprehensively evaluating local governments that participate in the open call based on criteria such as site suitability, public acceptance, and plans for securing infrastructure.
To ensure objective evaluation, the Ministry will also form a Site Selection Committee, which will be chaired by an external expert.
For the selected local governments, the Ministry intends to build amenities such as sports facilities and parking lots that can be shared with local residents, and to consult with relevant agencies to hire local talent as correctional officers.
Minister of Justice Jeong Sung-ho stated, "Correctional facilities are essential national infrastructure that protects the lives and safety of the public," adding, "We will resolve the issue of overcrowding by creating correctional facilities that coexist with local communities."
