Yoo Jae-sung, Acting Commissioner General of the Korean National Police Agency, issued an apology today (July 10) regarding the controversy over poor investigation and allegations of collusion surrounding the "Jang Yoon-gi case," stating, "I am deeply sorry for causing concern to the public."
The Acting Commissioner General made these remarks while meeting with reporters upon his arrival at Incheon International Airport Terminal 2 early this morning, following the conclusion of his business trip to the United States.
Having returned one day earlier than originally scheduled, Yoo stated, "I cut my trip short to return early," adding, "I am fully aware of the gravity of this situation."
Regarding the growing public sentiment in favor of granting supplementary investigation powers to the prosecution in the wake of this incident, he said, "I believe the issue of supplementary investigation powers will be decided through legislative policy after sufficient discussion in the National Assembly," and added, "The police will also provide necessary opinions during the discussion process."
It is expected that Yoo will personally receive reports on the situation regarding the "Jang Yoon-gi case" and deliberate on measures to reverse the worsening public opinion toward the police.
He is scheduled to preside over a video conference with the national police leadership at 9:20 a.m. today.
