A man in his 60s has been sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting and molesting his young niece over several years.
The Jeju District Court Criminal Division 2 (Presiding Judge Seo Beom-wook) sentenced the defendant, identified as A, to 8 years in prison today (July 9) on charges including violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes (rape of a minor under 13).
The court also ordered the defendant to complete 80 hours of a sexual violence treatment program, disclose and register his personal information for 10 years, and restricted him from seeking employment at institutions related to children, adolescents, or the disabled for 10 years.
A was indicted on charges of repeatedly raping and molesting his niece, who was under the age of 13, between 2023 and 2025, and producing sexually explicit material using a mobile phone.
The court stated, "The defendant, as the victim's uncle, committed these crimes over a long period while the victim's mother was away for work. The nature of the crime is poor, as it violates the minimum moral obligations one must uphold as a human being," adding, "The psychological trauma inflicted on the victim and her family appears to be severe."
However, the court explained the sentencing factors by noting that the defendant has admitted to his wrongdoing, reached a settlement with the victim's side, and is a first-time offender.
