The People Power Party has appointed one additional member to its Ethics Committee.
Chief Spokesperson Choi Bo-yoon told reporters that the party approved the appointment during a closed-door Supreme Council meeting on July 9.
With this addition, the Ethics Committee, which previously consisted of six members including Chairman Yoon Min-woo, has expanded to seven members.
The party constitution and regulations stipulate that the central party's Ethics Committee can be composed of up to nine members.
Personal information regarding the committee members is not disclosed.
The newly appointed member is reportedly an external figure.
When asked about the background of the appointment, Chief Spokesperson Choi stated, "Ethics Committee disciplinary reviews had been halted before the local elections. It is a natural and necessary procedure for the committee to convene after the local elections in accordance with the demands of party members and the party's constitution and regulations." She added, "As nine is the maximum number of members allowed, there was a consensus within the Supreme Council, and the appointment was made through a Supreme Council resolution."
Previously, Representative Jang, who faced calls to resign following the defeat in the June 3 local elections, announced a plan to discipline those engaging in harmful activities at the end of last month, stating, "I cannot help but ask whether the purpose of lawmakers attacking the leadership is to save the party or to ruin it."
The Ethics Committee held its first meeting on July 6 to deliberate on approximately 60 disciplinary cases, but as it was the first meeting, no decisions were made to initiate disciplinary proceedings.
The ethics committee members plan to meet again in the future to continue discussions on whether to initiate disciplinary procedures.
Following consultations at the Supreme Council meeting on this day, Representative Jang Dong-hyuk confirmed and announced the retention of Spokesperson Ham In-kyung and Media Spokesperson Lee Ji-ae, whose terms had expired. He also appointed Bong Seong-beom, who previously served as the Incheon City Citizen Communication Officer and Policy Chief, as the new Media Spokesperson.
