Police have been conducting a search and seizure operation at Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine since this morning, July 9, over allegations of insurance fraud amounting to tens of billions of won.
The Financial Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has dispatched investigators to five facilities associated with the hospital nationwide, including the Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine in Gangnam-gu and the Jaseng Medical Foundation, to execute search warrants.
Previously, police received complaints from four insurance companies, including Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance and Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance, alleging that Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine had indiscriminately prescribed herbal medicine to traffic accident patients to illicitly obtain tens of billions of won in insurance payouts. The case was assigned to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Financial Crime Investigation Unit in April on charges of violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud.
It is reported that 23 individuals, including the chairman of the Jaseng Medical Foundation, the directors of 21 Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine branches across the country, and the representative of the off-site herbal medicine preparation center, were named as the accused in the complaints.
Through today's search and seizure, the police are expected to secure prescription records and analyze whether there was any organized attempt to siphon off insurance funds.
