Police have requested an arrest warrant today (July 7) for Inspector A, the investigation team leader in charge of the case involving Jang Yoon-gi, the perpetrator of the Gwangju high school student murder.
The National Police Agency's Special Investigation Team for Truth Finding regarding the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station murder case, led by Hong Jang-deuk, the agency's Director of Investigation and Human Rights, announced this through a press release today.
Inspector A is accused of tampering with evidence by failing to secure a cable tie during the search and seizure of Jang Yoon-gi's vehicle immediately following the incident on May 5.
At the time of the on-site search, the investigation team discovered the cable tie inside the vehicle before the forensic team arrived, but they did not secure it as evidence.
The incident has caused a significant stir, as the cable tie was a key piece of evidence that could have led to a charge of rape and murder, which carries a penalty of at least life imprisonment for Jang Yoon-gi.
Suspicions of collusion between the investigation team, including Inspector A, and Jang Yoon-gi's father, an incumbent police officer in the Gwangju area identified as Inspector Jang, are also under investigation.
The special investigation team, which was expanded to 27 members yesterday, received an additional six investigators and a team leader from the National Police Agency's Serious Crime Investigation Division this morning.
The office has been set up at the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency.
The special investigation team stated, "We plan to conduct a broad investigation into those involved to clarify the details and circumstances of the evidence tampering and related allegations," adding, "We will conduct a thorough and strict investigation to ensure that not a single shred of public suspicion remains."
