A man who intentionally collided with a vehicle while intoxicated to claim insurance money has been referred to the prosecution.
Guri Police Station announced that it referred a man in his 50s, identified by his surname Park, to the prosecution without detention on June 1 on charges of violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud.
In April, a report was filed in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, claiming that Park had been struck by a Morning vehicle that was reversing.
While it initially appeared to be a standard traffic accident, the investigation team grew suspicious after noticing that Park had fallen with excessive force despite the vehicle moving slowly in reverse. Upon reviewing CCTV footage from different angles, his criminal actions were uncovered.
Police investigation revealed that Park had been wandering around a crosswalk for 10 minutes prior to the incident while intoxicated, looking to induce a collision.
He was found to have jaywalked, jumped into the road twice, and even thrust his leg toward a passing taxi.
Park reportedly received approximately 900,000 won in insurance money from this incident, and the insurance company is currently in the process of reclaiming the funds.
Park initially denied the allegations, claiming, "I was on my way to smoke a cigarette when the accident happened." However, when the investigation team confronted him with the CCTV footage, he reportedly changed his stance, stating, "I don't remember it, but it is true that I collided with the car."
