An AI actor that sparked significant controversy in Hollywood last year is set to take on a lead role in a feature film.
U.S. entertainment media outlet Deadline reported on July 6 (local time) that AI actor Tilly Norwood has been cast as the lead in the comedy film 'Misaligned.'
'Misaligned' depicts the experiences of Tilly, an AI with no physical body or childhood, as she develops desires and impulses due to a malicious bot.
The film is currently being produced by Particle6, a British production company founded by Dutch actor and producer Eline van der Velden.
Van der Velden, who created Norwood last year, expressed her anticipation for the film, stating, "It will be distinctly funny, chaotic, and self-aware. It will be very Tilly."
Norwood is an AI actress with brown hair and a British accent. She first made waves in the film industry when she was introduced at a side event of the Zurich Film Festival in Switzerland last October.
At the time, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) issued a statement in response to the announcement of Norwood's activities, criticizing her by saying, "Norwood is not an actor." The union added, "She will create problems by stealing actors' performances, leaving them unemployed, threatening the livelihoods of performers, and undermining human artistry."
In response, Van der Velden explained, "We will still want to see Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds," adding, "Just as we direct 'Elsa' (the protagonist of Frozen) in animation, we can also direct computer-generated (CG) characters."
