U.S. President Donald Trump is facing controversy after posting a photo of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on his social media account with the caption, "Need a restraining order."
The posted photo shows Prime Minister Meloni smiling as she looks at President Trump.
Prime Minister Meloni has not yet released an official statement regarding the post.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto expressed a cautious stance, stating, "The most important thing is to maintain relations with a key ally like the United States."
However, Carlo Calenda, leader of the centrist opposition party Azione, criticized President Trump, calling him a "vile third-rate bully."
President Trump has recently been making a series of public jabs at Prime Minister Meloni.
At the G7 summit last month, he sparked controversy by claiming that Prime Minister Meloni had "begged him" to take a photo with her.
He also claimed, "We have protected them for decades, but when put to the test, they, meaning Italy, do not protect us or the rest of the world."
Previously, in April, the two clashed publicly over President Trump's remarks regarding the Pope.
When Prime Minister Meloni defended the Pope and criticized the remarks as "unacceptable," President Trump retorted that "she is the one who is unacceptable."
