President Lee Jae-myung has ordered strict measures against workplace bullying, stating that "Taeum" is "a horrific form of violence that can never be justified," following reports that a nurse in her 20s took her own life due to such harassment.
On July 1, President Lee wrote on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a media report about a nurse who died after resigning from a hospital in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, due to workplace bullying.
"The truth behind this incident must be thoroughly uncovered. We will immediately launch a labor inspection of the hospital in question," President Lee said. "I urge the police to clarify whether any illegal acts occurred in connection with this case, leaving no room for suspicion."
He continued, "We will conduct random, unannounced planned inspections of medical institutions that may face similar risks." He added, "We will fundamentally improve the organizational culture and working environment within hospitals, expand consulting for workplace innovation in medical settings, and push for institutional improvements to prevent and swiftly respond to workplace bullying."
"I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family," President Lee promised. "The government will fulfill its responsibility to ensure that everyone's inherent right to work safely and be treated with respect is upheld in the workplace."
