A liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier that was struck by a missile attack from the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the Strait of Hormuz is at risk of exploding due to a fire, Reuters reported on July 7 (local time), citing sources.
According to the sources, a fire broke out on the Qatari-flagged LNG carrier Al Rekayyat after it was hit by a missile near the Strait of Hormuz on the night of July 6.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) previously stated that an oil tanker and an LNG carrier passing through the Strait of Hormuz, 15 km east of Lima, Oman, were struck by unidentified projectiles, causing fires.
While the UKMTO did not disclose information regarding the oil tanker, the vessel hit is believed to be the Al Rekayyat.
One source stated, "The Al Rekayyat was carrying LNG at the time, and after being hit on the port side, it sent out a distress signal requesting rescue."
