A married couple who filed a false report of sexual assault to extort a settlement has been sentenced to prison. The Jeju District Court sentenced a woman in her 30s, identified as A, and her husband in his 40s, identified as B, to two years and one year in prison, respectively, on charges including false accusation and obstruction of justice. The couple was indicted for falsely claiming that A had been sexually assaulted by an acquaintance, C, whom she met while working at a bar in September of last year. They were also charged with wasting public resources by causing police to be dispatched through their false reports. Investigations revealed that the couple conspired to commit the crime with the intent of extorting money. On the day of the incident, after drinking with C and going to a hotel, A sent a text message to the police pleading for help, while B filed a false missing person report regarding his wife. As a result, approximately 20 police officers were dispatched to the scene to conduct searches and inquiries. A later submitted a written statement to the responding officers, claiming that she had been raped and assaulted by C. The court stated, "The crime of false accusation requires strict punishment as it puts the victim at risk of unjust prosecution, and the defendants' actions obstructed the police in the performance of their official duties." However, the court explained the sentencing decision by noting, "We have taken into account that the defendants confessed and are reflecting on their actions, and have made some efforts to restore the damage caused to the victim."
