It has been confirmed that U.S. government agencies have been using Mythos, an AI model developed by Anthropic, for several months, despite ongoing conflicts regarding the scope of artificial intelligence (AI) usage.
This move stands in contrast to the directive issued by U.S. President Donald Trump, who ordered all government agencies to refrain from using Anthropic products, and the U.S. Department of Defense's decision to designate Anthropic as a supply chain risk company.
Reuters reported on July 6 (local time), citing multiple sources, that the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, has been using Mythos to audit government software.
According to the sources, CISA has been utilizing Mythos to monitor government code repositories to identify security vulnerabilities that could be exploited by foreign spies and cybercriminals.
This work is being handled by CISA's "Red Team," an organization responsible for conducting digital security assessments and penetration testing across government agencies.
Reuters reported that while it could not confirm exactly how much government code the team has audited, multiple sources indicated that numerous vulnerabilities have been discovered.
Anthropic has been in conflict with U.S. authorities since the beginning of this year.
The tension arose after it was revealed that the U.S. military used Anthropic's Claude during an operation to arrest former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
At the time, Anthropic argued that its AI models should not be used for mass surveillance or autonomous lethal weapons, while the Department of Defense countered that it must be allowed to use them for all lawful activities.
As the conflict between the two sides reached a peak, the U.S. Department of Defense designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk company.
The "supply chain risk" classification had previously been applied only to foreign companies suspected of facilitating espionage activities.
The conflict appeared to ease slightly after a U.S. federal court in the Northern District of California put a brake on such measures, and Anthropic released Mythos, which is known for its excellence in identifying cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
In this regard, Reuters interpreted the situation as a sign that U.S. government agencies are proactive in adopting Anthropic's AI tools, despite the confrontational stance with the White House.
Previously, there were also media reports that the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) had been using Mythos since April.
