Two people in their 20s who went out for nighttime tidal flat foraging to catch mud crabs in Jeju were rescued by the Coast Guard after becoming stranded by the rising tide.
According to the Seogwipo Coast Guard in Jeju, a report was received around 10:30 p.m. yesterday (July 4) stating that two tourists in their 20s were stranded on rocks near Handogyo Bridge in Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo.
It was reported that they had entered the water to catch mud crabs but sought refuge on the rocks and called for help after feeling endangered by the rapidly rising water level due to the incoming tide.
The Coast Guard approached the scene using a motorized rescue board and successfully rescued both individuals.
They were in good health and returned to their accommodation.
However, one member of the Coast Guard rescue team sustained an ankle injury during the operation.
A Coast Guard official advised, "When engaging in coastal activities such as tidal flat foraging, one must check the local tide times in advance," adding, "In particular, during high tide, the water level can rise in an instant, creating a high risk of becoming stranded or slipping into deep water, so life jackets must be worn during coastal activities."
