China has demonstrated that its relationship with Iran remains unchanged by sending a high-level delegation to the funeral of the former Supreme Leader of Iran to express its condolences.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, He Wei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, attended the funeral of Khamenei in Tehran, Iran, as a representative of the Chinese government. He met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to convey the Chinese government's sympathies.
"China expresses its deep condolences over the unfortunate passing of Supreme Leader Khamenei and extends sincere sympathy to the Iranian government, its people, and the bereaved family," He Wei said. "We hope that under the leadership of Supreme Leader Mojtaba, Iran will quickly restore security and stability and continue to develop."
He further emphasized, "Over the 55 years since establishing diplomatic ties, China-Iran relations have developed in a stable and healthy manner. China's determination to develop its relationship with Iran is firm, and the direction of bilateral ties will not change."
He added, "We hope that both countries will work together to further develop our comprehensive strategic partnership in a more stable manner."
He Wei also stated that China welcomes the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that both sides will implement existing agreements, maintain a ceasefire, and continue the momentum of negotiations with a rational and pragmatic attitude.
Furthermore, he expressed his hope that the issue of the Strait of Hormuz would be resolved smoothly and that countries in the region would maintain friendly relations.
In response, the Iranian side congratulated China on the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and expressed gratitude for China's decision to send a high-level delegation to the funeral, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
