Students from the Paichai High School baseball team, who shouted inappropriate cheers related to the May 18 Democratization Movement during a high school baseball game, will visit Gwangju Jeil High School on July 6 to offer an apology.
This comes one week after Paichai High School baseball players shouted cheers such as "Let's go to Starbucks" toward Gwangju Jeil High School during a game on June 29.
The chants were criticized for being reminiscent of the recent controversy surrounding a promotional event held by Starbucks Korea on the anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement.
Gwangju Jeil High School announced that it would accept a visit from about 80 people, including student athletes, coaches, parents, and faculty from Paichai High School, at 3:00 p.m. on July 6.
"We decided to allow the apology visit from Paichai High School after considering the students' exam schedules, including final exams, the psychological stability of our baseball team members, and school operations," the school stated. "We decided to accept the apology in the sense that it is necessary to show reflection on mistakes and move toward reconciliation."
The school added, "To reflect on the wrongdoing and make a fresh start, we have decided to pay a joint tribute at the May 18th National Cemetery."
Accordingly, the baseball team members, coaches, and parents from both schools plan to hold a time of apology and reconciliation for about 30 minutes in the auditorium of Gwangju Jeil High School before visiting the May 18th National Cemetery together.
