An SBS investigation has confirmed that Inspector Jang, the father of 23-year-old Jang Yoon-gi, a suspect in the murder of a high school girl in Gwangju, had been working at the very police station handling the investigation until just before the incident.
The case is being handled by the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, and it has been determined that Inspector Jang was assigned there before transferring to a nearby station in March of last year.
As previously reported by SBS, it was revealed that Inspector Jang disposed of several life-sized dolls, which are considered key evidence related to his son's charges of murder with the intent of committing a sex crime.
The Gwangsan Police Station, which is in charge of the case, identified the presence of these dolls during a search and seizure of Jang Yoon-gi's residence during the initial investigation but failed to seize them. Investigations show that the day after Jang Yoon-gi was arrested, Inspector Jang dismantled the items and discarded them in various locations across Gwangju.
Internal inspections of police officers at the rank of inspector are handled by the regional police agency. The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency stated today, "We intended to announce the results of our fact-finding mission regarding the SBS report, but we will provide an update later as more thorough fact-checking is required."
Separately from the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency, the National Police Agency stated regarding the evidence destruction case, "We plan to verify the facts through an inspection to determine if there were any shortcomings in the police investigation process and to investigate the allegations of evidence destruction by Jang Yoon-gi's father."
