The film 'Pupil,' starring actress Shin Min-a, has achieved a remarkable feat by reaching the top of the box office in its second week of release.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network for movie theater tickets on July 2, 'Pupil' took the top spot at the box office by drawing 49,098 viewers nationwide on July 1. The cumulative number of viewers stands at 432,137.
'Toy Story 5,' which had held the number one spot at the box office for the past 14 days, was pushed down to second place by the surge of 'Pupil.'
'Pupil' is a suspense thriller about Seo-jin, who is gradually losing her sight due to a genetic disease, as she uncovers the truth behind the death of her twin sister. The film stars Shin Min-a and Kim Nam-hee and is directed by Yeom Ji-ho, who gained attention for the film 'Next Door Neighbors.'
Although it started in the second or third position during its initial release, positive word-of-mouth paved the way for this reversal. It is particularly encouraging that the film created this upset solely through the strength of the work itself, despite having fewer screens and fewer scheduled screenings than 'Toy Story 5.'
