According to Reuters and other reports on July 1 (local time), health authorities in Mexico City stated that three individuals died from suffocation as a large number of citizens flocked to the area near the Angel of Independence, a landmark in the city center.

At the time, a massive crowd had gathered near the celebration site to cheer for Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the North and Central American World Cup Round of 32, which marked the country's first World Cup tournament win in 40 years.
