A man who fell victim to an investment scam took matters into his own hands to catch the perpetrators, helping police set a trap to apprehend them.

On June 12, a 112 emergency call was received.

The caller asked, "I am supposed to deliver 100 million won to a voice phishing criminal; can you send officers in plain clothes?"

According to the investigation, the caller had been approached by a group led by a person identified as A, who claimed to be an executive at a well-known securities firm, with an investment offer promising a 450 percent return.

The group demanded 100 million won in cash for the investment, which was, in fact, a scam.

The caller had actually lost tens of millions of won to a similar scam earlier this year. Determined to catch the fraudsters himself, he joined a Naver Band group operated by them.

When the scammers approached him, he lured them to a cafe for a meeting and called the police, requesting that officers arrive in plain clothes.

Responding to the call, police deployed plainclothes officers to the scene to stake out the location. As the caller handed over a bag containing fake money, the officers arrested A on the spot.
