The body of a victim from a murder and abandonment case involving a cohabitant that occurred in Gangbuk, Seoul, earlier this year has been discovered in the Namhan River, and police are currently verifying the identity.
According to police and fire authorities, a report was made to 119 at approximately 4:49 p.m. today (July 1) by a driver who stated, "Something that looks like a mannequin is floating in the middle of the bridge" in the Namhan River in Yangseo-myeon, Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province.
Fire authorities discovered and recovered the body between the 7th and 8th piers of Yongdam Bridge and handed the scene over to the police.
Police investigation confirmed that the recovered body is that of a person in their 30s, surnamed Lee, who was murdered at an apartment in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, on January 14.
On the day of the incident, Lee's cohabitant, Seong (34), strangled Lee to death after an argument over issues such as a request for motorcycle fuel money, and abandoned the body at Dumulmeori in the Namhan River.
At the time, police launched an investigation after receiving a report from an acquaintance on January 21, one week after the crime, stating that they could not reach Lee. Police identified Seong as a suspect and arrested him.
Seong, who was subsequently indicted, is currently on trial. However, the victim's body had not been found until recently, and was finally recovered today, nearly six months after the incident.
The police are considering transferring the body to the Seoul Dobong Police Station, which was in charge of the initial investigation into the case.
