Paejae High School is considering withdrawing from the remaining games of the Blue Dragon National High School Baseball Championship following a controversy over students shouting cheers that mocked the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement during a match against Gwangju Jeil High School. As the controversy surrounding the group cheering, which contained regional disparagement directed at Gwangju Jeil High School students, continues to spread, it has been reported that Paejae High School is considering forfeiting its match against Suncheon Hyocheon High School scheduled for tomorrow as an act of self-reflection. The Blue Dragon tournament, along with the Golden Lion tournament, is considered one of the most prestigious high school baseball competitions and is a critical event where professional scouts evaluate the skills of the players. Given that this could significantly impact the players' college admissions and professional recruitment, sufficient consultation between the school and the students is necessary. In the meantime, it is reported that Lee Hyo-jun, the principal of Paejae High School, has expressed his intention to visit Gwangju Jeil High School in person to offer an apology. Paejae High School staff members also plan to visit Gwangju Jeil High School as early as today to convey their apologies. The baseball team's players and their parents are also discussing plans to visit Gwangju Jeil High School to apologize in person. Lee Gyu-yeon, the principal of Gwangju Jeil High School, is reported to have stated that he will first confirm the opinions of his students. Paejae High School posted an apology on its website yesterday, stating, "We sincerely apologize for causing deep hurt and disappointment to the Gwangju Jeil High School team, their parents, alumni, the citizens of Gwangju, and many others due to the inappropriate cheering slogans used by some of our student athletes." Previously, some students from the Paejae High School baseball team repeatedly shouted slogans such as "Let's go to Starbucks" and "Tank Day" toward the opposing dugout during the match against Gwangju Jeil High School at the Blue Dragon tournament on the 29th of last month. This drew criticism for regional disparagement, as it was reminiscent of the controversy surrounding Starbucks' marketing that was accused of disparaging the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. May 18 advocacy groups and teachers' organizations have issued statements condemning the incident and calling for countermeasures, and the matter has currently been referred to the Sports Fair Committee of the Korea Baseball Softball Association.
