The monsoon season has officially begun in Jeju today, June 30.
This marks the third-latest start to the monsoon season since weather records began.
However, as the season kicks off with heavy rainfall, residents are advised to take thorough precautions.
Rain intensity is expected to increase across Jeju starting tonight.
As shown in the forecast, a band of intense red rain clouds will cover the southern coast and Jeju starting early tomorrow morning.
From early tomorrow morning through the afternoon, heavy rain of 20 to 50 millimeters per hour is expected in coastal areas of South Jeolla Province and Jeju.
The expected rainfall amounts are up to 180 millimeters or more in the mountainous regions of Jeju, up to 100 millimeters in other parts of Jeju, and over 80 millimeters along the coast of South Jeolla Province. Other southern regions will see 5 to 40 millimeters of monsoon rain.
As seen in the satellite imagery, the stationary front is currently approaching Jeju closely.
With strong winds and heavy rain expected in Jeju starting early tomorrow morning, preliminary warnings for strong winds and heavy rain have been issued.
Meanwhile, the central regions will continue to experience a heatwave, with some areas expecting showers tomorrow afternoon.
Looking at the detailed daytime temperatures, temperatures in central areas are expected to soar to around 33°C (91°F).
The monsoon rain will briefly subside on Thursday before continuing consistently thereafter, with rain forecast for regions south of Chungcheong on Saturday.
The start of the monsoon season in the central regions remains to be seen.
