The investment plan for the Honam region is part of the 3 Major Mega Projects totaling 896 trillion won, which was announced yesterday, led by four semiconductor fabs worth 800 trillion won.
Detailed specifics were unveiled at the national report meeting held in Gwangju today.
The plan involves SK investing 470 trillion won, Samsung Electronics 425 trillion won, and Amkor 1 trillion won to build semiconductor memory plants, packaging plants, AI data centers, and computing centers.
President Lee Jae-myung stated that the slow development caused by past discrimination between the Yeongnam and Honam regions has actually turned Honam's remaining land and water infrastructure into investment advantages.
[President Lee Jae-myung: What is clear is this. This is based on economic principles.]
Earlier at a cabinet meeting, President Lee also emphasized, "It is true that the investment in Honam is somewhat large when looking at this matter alone, but when compared to the historically accumulated investment volume, it is merely a drop in the bucket."
President Lee explained why Samsung and SK changed their minds about building additional complexes after completing the development of the Yongin semiconductor cluster as follows:
[President Lee Jae-myung: Since demand is exploding right now, I suggested we proceed simultaneously, and they agreed, right? To put it nicely, I induced them, or to put it more strongly, I enticed them. I did not use coercion or force.]
President Lee stated that he would personally chair the Semiconductor Special Committee to be launched in August, adding that he would prove that this project is not just a common policy show by politicians.
President Lee will visit Asan in South Chungcheong Province the day after tomorrow, and Jinju in South Gyeongsang Province three days later, to announce development strategies for cutting-edge industries in the Chungcheong and Yeongnam regions, respectively.
