The special counsel team investigating the insurrection has issued a direct rebuttal to the 2nd Comprehensive Special Counsel team, led by Kwon Chang-young, which had criticized the previous investigation into People Power Party lawmakers regarding the alleged obstruction of the arrest of former President Yoon Suk Yeol as insufficient.
In a press statement today (June 30), the insurrection special counsel team pointed out, "The remarks made by an official from the Comprehensive Special Counsel that 'the insurrection special counsel did not investigate anything' regarding the charges of obstructing the arrest of former President Yoon by People Power Party lawmakers are contrary to the facts."
The insurrection special counsel team further emphasized, "We reviewed and analyzed all evidence, including body camera footage from investigators such as those from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) taken at the scene during the execution of the arrest warrant, as well as footage from media outlets and YouTubers who were broadcasting live at the scene," adding, "We made our decision based on legal principles after reviewing and analyzing statements heard from numerous police officers who participated in the warrant execution."
During a regular briefing held yesterday (June 29) afternoon, the Comprehensive Special Counsel team announced that following Representative Na Kyung-won of the People Power Party, they have also booked Representatives Kim Gi-hyeon, Kwon Young-jin, and Yun Sang-hyun on charges of obstruction of special public duties in connection with the alleged obstruction of the arrest of former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The insurrection special counsel team, which previously investigated the case, had received complaints against Representative Na and others, examined the facts, and concluded the case by dismissing it, determining that the charges were not substantiated.
The Comprehensive Special Counsel team explained that they decided to reinvestigate, stating, "As a result of securing and analyzing evidence such as footage, we confirmed the necessity to investigate facts that were not sufficiently clarified during the insurrection special counsel team's investigation."
Kwon Young-bin, an assistant special counsel who conducted the briefing, had remarked, "The insurrection special counsel team did not investigate anything (regarding the alleged obstruction of the arrest)."
