As the 'Jamsil Vote Counting Center Blockade Protest' nears its one-month mark, the number of suspects under police investigation for illegal activities continues to rise.
An official from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency stated during a regular press briefing today (June 29) that they are currently conducting 57 investigations related to the Jamsil vote counting center, with 139 individuals identified as subjects of the investigation.
First, 9 people have been booked for obstructing access to the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee's handball stadium, with the identities of 7 of them confirmed. Additionally, the identities of 5 individuals who were caught rummaging through the belongings of the women's youth national handball team without permission have been verified; some have already been questioned, and the others have been notified to appear for questioning.
The police also stated that investigations are underway regarding the assault of a journalist, as well as cases of insults and obstruction of justice directed at police officers.
To date, the only arrest made was that of a woman in her 40s on the 23rd, who cursed at and spat on a police officer.
The police reported that a total of approximately 200 riot police units have been deployed since the protests began in front of the handball stadium on the 5th. They explained that these units, along with dialogue police officers who communicate at the scene and prevent conflicts, are focusing on maintaining order, managing crowd safety, and preventing disputes and friction among participants.
With no signs of the protests ending, the police plan to maintain an appropriate level of personnel until the situation on the ground stabilizes.
A police official reiterated a warning, stating, "We will guarantee the free expression of opinions related to the infringement of voting rights as much as possible, but we will respond strictly according to law and principle against clear illegal acts." Regarding the ongoing unnotified protests at the site, the official added, "It is a very unique situation where citizens are gathering individually, so we need to review our countermeasures more comprehensively."
