World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler of the United States is charging toward his second victory of the season after carding a 60, just one stroke shy of the "magic number" of 59, at the PGA Tour Travelers Championship (total prize money of $20 million).
In the second round held today (June 27) at TPC River Highlands (par 70) in Cromwell, Connecticut, which was dampened by rain, Scheffler recorded 10-under 60, tallying 11 birdies against a single bogey.
Scheffler signaled a potential record-breaking performance by shaving five strokes off his score on the front nine.
His only stumble came at the par-4 2nd hole, where he missed a 2.4-meter par putt, resulting in a bogey.
Starting the back nine with a birdie on the par-4 10th hole, Scheffler birdied four consecutive holes from the 13th to the 16th, putting a sub-60 round within his reach.
However, he fell short of the "magic number" as his 7.6-meter birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole missed the mark.
The record for the lowest single-round score in PGA Tour history is held by Jim Furyk of the United States.
Furyk set the record by shooting a 58 in the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship.
Scheffler previously shot a 59 during the second round of The Northern Trust held at TPC Boston in 2020.
"I definitely thought the course would be easier than yesterday, when the greens were firm and it was windy," Scheffler said.
"Some days the ball catches the edge of the hole and doesn't go in, and some days it just sucks right into the bottom of the cup," he added. "Today was one of those days where most of them went in."
With the afternoon wave of players still on the course, Scheffler finished his round early, sitting in sole possession of the lead at 16-under 124 through two rounds.
Leading Viktor Hovland of Norway (14-under 126) by two strokes, Scheffler is aiming for his second win of the season, five months after his victory at The American Express in January.
Scheffler is also the defending champion of this tournament from 2024.
