A light aircraft has crashed into a 108-story skyscraper in Beijing, China.

Earlier today (June 26), a light aircraft collided with the 108-story Citic Tower in Beijing's central business district, leading to evacuation measures in the surrounding area.

Videos circulating on social media, including X (formerly Twitter), show debris falling from the upper floors of the Citic Tower after the impact, as well as a taxi on the street with its rear window shattered.

Photos have also spread showing the tail section of the aircraft, with the characters "B-12" visible, lying upside down on the ground after having separated from the plane.

The South China Morning Post reported that it has not been confirmed whether there were any casualties, and that the number of people on board and the circumstances of the crash remain unknown.

Chinese authorities and state-run media have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.

A witness who works in a nearby building stated that they heard a loud noise around 5:40 p.m. today but did not see the moment of impact, while a woman who was inside the Citic Tower reported that she was urgently evacuated from the building around 5:50 p.m.

Police have cordoned off the roads around the crash site and dispersed the crowds that had gathered.

Police forces and ambulances have been deployed near the Citic Tower.

According to photos of the wreckage and information circulating on social media, the aircraft involved appears to be a two-seater, single-engine light aircraft, the Sunward SA60L Aurora (registration number B-12PP), manufactured by China's Sunward Technology, and it appears to have been operated by a private entity.

CNN reported that, according to the flight tracking website Flightradar24, the aircraft had significantly deviated from its planned flight path.

The Citic Tower is the headquarters of the major Chinese financial conglomerate CITIC Group and was completed in 2018.

Standing 528 meters tall with 108 floors above ground (and 7 below), it is the tallest building in Beijing and is also nicknamed "China Zun" due to its shape, which resembles an ancient Chinese wine vessel.
