▲ Park Mi-kyung, New Chair of the 'Committee of Light'
President Lee Jae-myung nominated Park Mi-kyung (63), Chairperson and Co-chair of the Gwangju Federation for Environmental Movement, as the chair of the presidential 'Committee of Light' today (June 26).
Kang Yu-jung, Senior Presidential Secretary for Public Affairs, announced the nomination in a written briefing today, introducing the new chair as "the right person to honor the citizens who defended the Constitution and democracy through the revolution of light against the insurrection, and to promote the status of K-democracy both domestically and internationally."
Secretary Kang added, "Chairperson Park is a civic activist who has dedicated 30 years to civil society and the development of democracy. Based on her deep understanding of civic democracy and her ability to communicate, she will further enhance the completeness of the K-democracy that the people have protected, thereby supporting a government of popular sovereignty."
Chairperson Park has been active in civic movements based in Gwangju for a long time and has served as a co-representative of the Korea Federation for Environmental Movements, standing representative of the Gwangju Civic Groups Council, and executive director of the Gwangju Environmental Corporation.
The Committee of Light is an organization established to honor citizens who contributed to the defense of the Constitution and democracy during the national crisis of the December 3 emergency martial law. It establishes the basic direction for the expansion of Korean-style participatory democracy and carries out projects to issue and award 'Certificates of Light' to citizens who contributed to the protection of democracy during the emergency martial law.
