With news that large sharks are appearing more frequently along the east coast due to climate change, those planning to visit the beach this summer should exercise caution.
Marine safety is on high alert as the number of large sharks confirmed has quadrupled compared to last year.
According to the National Institute of Fisheries Science, a total of 46 large sharks were spotted along the east coast in the first half of this year, a 3.8-fold increase from the 12 recorded a year ago.
The sightings include numerous species capable of harming humans, such as shortfin mako sharks, blue sharks, and sandbar sharks.
Notably, nearly 80% of these sightings were concentrated within the two months of May and June.
Experts attribute the frequent shark appearances primarily to rising water temperatures along the east coast and an increase in warm-water fish species.
The National Institute of Fisheries Science has urged the public to get out of the water immediately if a shark is spotted, report it to the Korea Coast Guard or local authorities, and strictly follow beach safety guidelines.
