The number of weekly new installations of the Starbucks app has dropped by nearly half in just two weeks.
During the same period, estimated payment amounts via credit and check cards remained at levels similar to the previous week, showing no clear signs of recovery.
According to Mobile Index, an AI data tech firm, on the 24th, the number of new Starbucks app installations from June 15 to 21 was recorded at 22,783.
This is a decrease of 5,701 from the 28,484 installations recorded during the previous week of June 8 to 14.
Compared to the 43,540 installations in the first week of this month (June 1 to 7), this represents a sharp decline of 20,757, or 47.7%.
In effect, the number of new installations has fallen to about half the level in just two weeks.
For reference, the number of weekly new installations from May 11 to 17, before the "Tank Day" controversy in the middle of last month, was 48,441.
The app's ranking for new installations in the food and beverage brand and membership category also fell from 3rd in the first week of June to 10th in the second week and 13th in the third week.
Starbucks' payment volume remained flat last week.
The estimated payment amount via credit and check cards at Starbucks from June 15 to 21 was 22.78 billion won, which is an increase of only about 13 million won, or 0.1%, from the previous week's 22.76 billion won.
Compared to the 24.21 billion won in payment volume from the first week of June, this is about 1.43 billion won, or 5.9%, lower.
Starbucks' payment volume rebounded to the 24.2 billion won range in the first week of this month, decreased to the 22.7 billion won range in the second week, and remained at a similar level in the third week.
However, some point out that because Starbucks has already established a large member base, it is difficult to conclude that there are signs of an overall customer exodus based solely on the stagnation in payment volume and the decline in new installations.
Previously, Starbucks Korea faced controversy for using expressions such as "Tank Day" during a tumbler discount event on May 18, the anniversary of the Gwangju Democratization Movement.
