A Chinese criminal ring that facilitated prostitution through an internet website in downtown Jeju has been apprehended by police.
The Jeju Provincial Police Agency announced today (June 23) that they have arrested a Chinese woman in her 30s, identified as A, and booked a man in his 30s, identified as B, without detention on charges of violating the Act on the Punishment of Arrangements for Sexual Traffic.
They are accused of creating a Chinese-language website to advertise prostitution services and recruit customers.
Acting on intelligence, police conducted an undercover operation posing as customers. They confirmed that prostitution was taking place at an officetel in Yeon-dong, Jeju City, and secured relevant evidence.
Following the arrest of the male suspect, B, on the 18th, police conducted an emergency arrest of the female suspect, A, on the 21st, who is believed to have been involved in fund management and the facilitation of prostitution.
Police are currently pursuing two other members of the ring who have fled overseas.
Authorities have requested the shutdown of the prostitution website and are continuing to investigate the scale of the criminal operation and the flow of funds.
