[Anchor] First, an elderly couple in their 80s nearly lost their entire life savings to a voice phishing scam, but were saved just in time, is that right?
[Reporter] Yes, the police's proactive prevention system successfully prevented a major financial loss.
An elderly couple in their 80s, identified as A, living in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, recently received a phone call from someone impersonating a community service center employee.
The criminal organization, which later impersonated officials from the Financial Supervisory Service and the prosecution, psychologically pressured the couple by claiming that their bank accounts were involved in a crime.
They induced the couple to install a malicious app that allows remote access and even showed them a fake website impersonating the Supreme Prosecutors' Office to make it appear as if they were under an actual investigation.
The couple was eventually on the verge of consolidating their entire life savings of 1.5 billion won into a single account and transferring it.
Fortunately, they were saved by the "phishing crime prevention activities" of the Gyeonggi Bukbu Provincial Police Agency's Metropolitan Prevention Patrol.
The police detected the installation of the malicious app and suspicious connection patterns in real-time and immediately dispatched officers to the scene.
They were able to prevent the damage just in time by immediately deleting the malicious app and swiftly taking measures to suspend the bank accounts.
The elderly couple, who nearly lost the wealth they had spent their entire lives accumulating, repeatedly expressed their gratitude to the police.
