South Korean hospitals have secured the top spot in 9 out of 10 specialized medical categories in the latest Asia-Pacific hospital rankings by the U.S. weekly news magazine Newsweek.

According to the "Best Specialized Hospitals Asia-Pacific 2026" rankings released by Newsweek on June 18, hospitals such as Asan Medical Center, Samsung Medical Center, and Seoul National University Hospital were named the best in 9 of the 10 categories evaluated, with the exception of neurosurgery.

In particular, Korean hospitals swept the top 4 spots in endocrinology, orthopedics, and pulmonology, and the top 3 spots in cardiology and oncology.

By institution, Asan Medical Center ranked first in the Asia-Pacific region in 5 categories: cardiology, cardiac surgery, neurology, endocrinology, and orthopedics.

Asan Medical Center stated that it achieved the highest number of top-ranked categories among hospitals from the 11 countries evaluated.

Samsung Medical Center ranked first in 3 categories: oncology, pulmonology, and gastroenterology.

Samsung Medical Center noted that it has been selected as the best hospital in the oncology and pulmonology categories for three consecutive years since 2024, and also received high marks in the gastroenterology category, which was evaluated for the first time this year.

In addition, Severance Hospital ranked 2nd in neurosurgery and 4th in both endocrinology and pulmonology; Kyung Hee University Hospital ranked 3rd in orthopedics; Gangnam Severance Hospital ranked 4th in neurosurgery; and The Catholic University of Korea Seoul St. Mary's Hospital ranked 6th in endocrinology.

Newsweek, in partnership with global research firm Statista, selects the world's best hospitals every February and the best specialized hospitals in the Asia-Pacific region every June.

For this Asia-Pacific survey, an online survey was conducted among approximately 8,000 medical professionals across 11 countries, including South Korea, Japan, Australia, Singapore, and Taiwan, to identify excellent hospitals in each field. The final results also comprehensively reflected national medical performance indicators and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs).
