A "three-tier inspection system" is being introduced to fundamentally block drug smuggling through large imported container cargo.

The Korea Customs Service announced today (June 17) that it has launched a "Special Inspection Team for Drugs in General Imported Cargo at Major Airports and Seaports" in Busan.

According to the Korea Customs Service, this adds a special inspection team's review between the initial inspection upon arrival and the general import inspection, establishing a total of three layers of drug monitoring and enforcement.

While it is difficult to detect drugs smuggled in general imported cargo, such as large containers, compared to personal shipments, any successful smuggling attempt can lead to the influx of large quantities of drugs.

Last year, 1,053 kg of cocaine hidden in refrigerated containers were detected in two consecutive instances at Busan New Port.

Five special drug inspection teams will be established first at major airports and seaports with high cargo volume, including Busan, Incheon International Airport, Incheon Port, and Pyeongtaek.

Korea Customs Service Commissioner Lee Jong-wook emphasized, "To thoroughly block drugs at the customs border, it is necessary to build an airtight enforcement network through double and triple inspections."
