Gang Dong-won Did Not Take Idol Turn Lightly; "Five Months of Intensive Training"

Actor Gang Dong-won has undertaken the most dynamic transformation since his debut. He has signaled a change in his acting repertoire by taking on the role of 'Hyun-woo,' the leader and 'dance machine' of the co-ed dance group 'Triangle,' in the movie 'Wild Sing,' which opens this coming June.

'Wild Sing' is a comedy film about 'Triangle,' a three-member co-ed dance group that once swept the music industry but disbanded overnight after becoming embroiled in an unexpected incident, as they attempt a reckless challenge to seize an opportunity for a comeback 20 years later.

'Hyun-woo,' played by Gang Dong-won, is a character who once dominated the B-boy scene as a self-proclaimed D.M., or 'dance machine,' whose specialties were infinite windmills and headspins. Although he was a figure who achieved a number one spot on music programs within a year of debuting as 'Triangle,' he now lives as a 'livelihood machine' wandering through the broadcasting industry with low recognition following the team's disbandment.

To achieve synchronization with the 'dance machine' 'Hyun-woo,' Gang Dong-won underwent five months of high-intensity choreography training. Choreographer Yang Wook, who was in charge of the performances in the film, stated, "Even though there was a significant amount of material to cover, from B-boying to hip-hop and the choreography for 'Triangle,' he added realism through a long period of meticulous training. He particularly drew admiration from all the staff by stably executing high-difficulty movements such as headspins."

Director Son Jae-gon, who directed the film, expressed deep trust in Gang Dong-won, saying, "Every director has likely envisioned a project with actor Gang Dong-won as the lead at least once. He is an actor with a very accurate eye for viewing the entire project. He particularly raised the level of the film's perfection by actively offering ideas on the overall music, choreography, and style of the movie."

Gang Dong-won's performance as the leader of a co-ed group can be seen in 'Wild Sing,' which opens on June 3.
