Nam Kyung-joo Indicted for Alleged Sexual Assault of Student

Musical actor Nam Kyung-joo (63) has been indicted on charges of sexually assaulting a student.

According to the legal community on April 28, the Women and Children’s Crimes Investigation Division 2 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, led by Chief Prosecutor Park Ji-na, indicted Nam without detention on April 24 on charges of sexual assault by abuse of authority.

Nam is accused of sexually assaulting a female student in December last year in the Seocho District of Seoul, allegedly using his social status and influence. The case was forwarded to prosecutors in February following a police investigation.

Nam is reported to have denied the allegations during the police investigation, but authorities concluded there was sufficient evidence and referred the case for prosecution.

At the prosecution stage, Nam’s side requested the case be referred to a criminal mediation process and attempted to reach a settlement with the victim. However, the victim declined, and no mediation took place.

In connection with the case, Nam had been serving as an associate professor in the musical theater department at Hongik University. The university held a disciplinary committee meeting in March and decided to suspend him from his position.
