CGV will spotlight the legacy of Ahn Sung-ki, a defining figure of Korean cinema, with a special retrospective.

The theater chain announced on the 19th that the “Ahn Sung-ki Memorial Retrospective,” celebrating his life in acting and his body of work, will run from March 25 to April 14 at the CGV Apgujeong Arthouse ART1 Hall, also known as the “Ahn Sung-ki Hall.” The event honors the late actor, who left an indelible mark on Korean film.

Ahn Sung-ki passed away in January at age 74. Over more than half a century, he appeared in over 100 films and became a symbol of Korean cinema, leaving a lasting impact.

The retrospective will screen eight landmark works across his career, from his child-actor turn in the 1960 classic "The Housemaid" to "Good Windy Day," "Whale Hunting," "Chilsu and Mansu," "Nowhere to Hide," "Radio Star," "Unbowed," and "Cassiopeia." The lineup is curated to trace his full filmography and his significance in Korean film history. The Korean Film Archive will support the screenings in solidarity with the program’s purpose.

This memorial series also marks the 10th anniversary of the CGV Apgujeong Arthouse ART1 “Ahn Sung-ki Hall.” The hall was established as part of CGV Arthouse’s “Korean Filmmaker Tribute Project,” which dedicates theaters to filmmakers who elevated Korean cinema and revisits their achievements.

Ticketing and detailed programming will be announced sequentially on the CGV mobile app and official website.

Jeon Jeong-hyeon, Head of Content Operations at CGV, said, “We prepared this program so audiences can once again meet Ahn Sung-ki’s films on the big screen, a star who represented Korean cinema for over half a century. We hope viewers take this time to reflect on his meaning in Korean film history through a wide range of works.”

Meanwhile, since 2016 CGV has continued the “Korean Filmmaker Tribute Project,” launching the CGV Arthouse Seomyeon Im Kwon-taek Hall and Apgujeong Ahn Sung-ki Hall in 2016; the CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall Park Chan-wook Hall in 2017; the CGV Myeong-dong Station Cine Library (now CGV Dongdaemun) Kim Ki-young Hall in 2018; and the CGV Gangbyeon Jeon Do-yeon Hall in 2019.
