The film "The King's Warden" surged past 6 million admissions nationwide just 20 days after release.
According to the Korean Film Council’s box office tracking on the 24th, "The King's Warden" drew 195,484 moviegoers on the 23rd to stay No. 1 at the box office. Its cumulative total stands at 6,024,347 admissions.
The film opened on Feb. 4. It started with around 100,000 daily viewers in its first week, then rebounded in week two as the Lunar New Year holiday began. Over the five-day holiday period, it pulled in 2.66 million viewers. Even after the holiday, it continued to attract nearly 200,000 moviegoers per day. Word of mouth is driving an unusual trend: stronger attendance as the run goes on, rather than a typical drop.
"The King's Warden" reached 6 million faster than the 10-million hit "The King and the Clown," which hit that mark on day 29, and it’s keeping pace with "Masquerade," which ultimately drew 12 million.
Set in 1457 in Cheongnyeongpo, the film follows the young, deposed former king Danjong, who has been exiled, and the people of the rural village of Gwangcheongol who take him in. The cast includes Yoo Hae-jin, Park Ji-hoon, Yoo Ji-tae, and Jeon Mi-do.
