Director Jung Ji-young and stars Yeom Hye-ran and Shin Woo-bin of the film 'My Name' are heading to the Berlin International Film Festival.
'My Name' is a cross-generational mystery drama about an 18-year-old boy who wants to discard a name that doesn’t fit him, a mother who must protect that name at all costs, and a journey to uncover a promise made 50 years ago hidden behind that very name.
With his signature sharp eye, director Jung explores the tragic modern history of the Jeju April 3 Uprising through the deeply personal yet symbolic lens of “names.” The film has earned an official invitation to the Berlinale Forum section.
The festival praised 'My Name' as “an astonishing act of breaking the silence left by a tragic history, built on a meticulously crafted narrative with powerful emotional resonance,” explaining its selection.
Jung Ji-young, Yeom Hye-ran, and Shin Woo-bin will kick off their official schedule on the red carpet at the opening ceremony of the 76th Berlin International Film Festival on the 12th. On the 13th, they will attend the world premiere of 'My Name,' greeting the audience and holding a Q&A to connect with local moviegoers.
The director and cast will also sit for a series of interviews with international and Korean outlets on site, spotlighting the film’s heavy-hitting message and the strength of Korean cinema. They will attend a special screening for Koreans living abroad, sharing a time of comfort and empathy.
Yeom Hye-ran, who rose to global prominence through Netflix’s "The Glory" and "Mask Girl," plays a mother guarding a 50-year secret. She’s poised to deliver a performance that builds from quiet ripples to a tidal wave of emotion.
Shin Woo-bin plays Young-ok, an 18-year-old boy who struggles with his feminine-sounding name, forming a warm mother-son bond with Yeom’s character. Landing Berlinale―one of the world’s “Big Three” film festivals―as his first lead is a rare feat for a debut.
Proving its artistry with the Berlinale invitation, 'My Name' will open in Korea this April.
