SBS’s new Friday-Saturday drama "Human from Today" is teeing up a fizzy, heart-fluttering, delightfully strange fantasy romance.
Ahead of its Jan. 16 premiere, the series dropped a Highlight reel on the 14th, introducing Eun-ho (Kim Hye-yoon), Kang Si-yeol (Lomon), and a roster of colorful characters whose fates are tangled in unexpected ways.
Human from Today follows a Gen Z gumiho (a mythical nine-tailed fox) who wants nothing to do with becoming human and a superstar athlete whose self-love is off the charts. The show blends a fresh gumiho mythology with quick-witted, reality-meets-fantasy storytelling. And with rom-com darling Kim Hye-yoon opposite rising star Lomon, anticipation is already running high.
The Highlight opens on Eun-ho’s past and her haunting vow: “I won’t become human. I won’t fall in love with one. I won’t live miserably and die unhappily.” Just as curiosity spikes about her long, complicated fox life, Eun-ho suddenly turns up under the same roof as Si-yeol―the very human she once dismissed as “worse than a gumiho”―hinting at a seismic shift in their dynamic.
To Eun-ho, a rule-breaking gumiho who dodges good deeds and romance alike, life among humans should be like pay-to-win gaming―no grind, all fun. But fate ties her to Kang Si-yeol, a soccer icon who knows only the game and himself. Their collision course begins with Hyun Woo-seok (Jang Dong-joo), a hard-luck player cut from even the fourth division.
When Woo-seok pleads, “I can’t end it like this,” Si-yeol pulls out Eun-ho’s mysterious “wish card.” To prove a point to the skeptical Si-yeol, Eun-ho grants Woo-seok’s wish―and sends Si-yeol the bill. “I just rewrote the fate of you two,” Eun-ho warns, as Si-yeol fires back, “I can’t live like that. No―I won’t!” The clash cranks up the intrigue over what price destiny will demand.
The reel also teases a gallery of uncanny figures: Geum-ho (Lee Si-woo), a gumiho who once lived with Eun-ho like an older sister; Lee Yoon (Choi Seung-yoon), a fourth-generation chaebol and Eun-ho’s VIP client who thinks money solves everything; and Jang Do-cheol (Kim Tae-woo), a mysterious shaman on the hunt for gumihos. Their arrivals are anything but ordinary.
As the line “The moment of choice finally comes for the gumiho” flashes, the charged shift between Eun-ho and Si-yeol hints at first love―and the fallout. Can our freewheeling fox recover her drained powers and navigate a feeling she’s never had before?
"Human from Today" premieres Jan. 16 (Fri.) at 9:50 p.m. KST on SBS, following "Taxi Driver 3."
