'Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia' Kicks Off Filming with Kim Ji-won·Lee Jung-eun·Son Hyun-joo

SBS’ buzzy new drama "Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia" has officially kicked off production, with cameras rolling on the first shoot and a stacked cast led by Kim Ji-won, Lee Jung-eun, Son Hyun-joo and Kim Woo-seok.

Set to premiere next year, the medical noir follows “Doctor X” Gye Su-jeong―a surgeon who proves what it really means to be a doctor on pure skill―as she cuts into a cartel of corruption rotting the system. The series adapts TV Asahi’s blockbuster "Doctor-X" franchise, which ran seven seasons from 2012 to 2021, and marks the next ambitious swing from SBS, home to crowd-pleasers like "Taxi Driver," "The Fiery Priest," "Flex X Cop" and "The Judge from Hell."

Director Lee Jung-lim ("VIP," "Revenant") teams with buzzed-about writer Pyeon Seong-geun, anchoring a starry lineup: Kim Ji-won as Gye Su-jeong, Lee Jung-eun as Jang Hee-sook, Son Hyun-joo as Bu Seung-gwon and Kim Woo-seok as Park Tae-kyung.

Kim steps into Gye Su-jeong, a brilliant freelance surgeon dispatched by a physician staffing agency to plug a gaping hole in Guseo University Hospital’s surgery department―better known around the OR as the “mad dog.” Lee Jung-eun plays Jang Hee-sook, the money-savvy boss of that doctor-for-hire agency. Son Hyun-joo portrays Bu Seung-gwon, the director of a Guseo University Hospital branch. Kim Woo-seok is Park Tae-kyung, a silver-spoon intern whose tidy hospital life unravels after he collides with Su-jeong.

Production officially started Dec. 4, marking a smooth first day on set. Stepping in front of the camera as Gye Su-jeong for the first time, Kim Ji-won signaled a confident start with a performance that already felt locked in.

“'Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia' has finally begun filming,” director Lee Jung-lim said. “From day one, our cast and crew brought laser focus to set. Kim Ji-won immediately nailed the fierce presence of Gye Su-jeong, giving the series a rock-solid center and raising expectations for what’s ahead.”

Lee added, “This is a medical noir centered on a genius surgeon’s crusade. We’ll pour everything into delivering a gripping, high-caliber story that pulls viewers in.”

With a successful kickoff, SBS’ new weekend drama has entered full-scale production and is slated to premiere next year.
