Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated on the 6th (local time) that two oil tankers collided with mines and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports.
Iran claimed that five oil tankers and other vessels suffered similar accidents the previous day as well.
In a statement broadcast on state TV that day, the IRGC said, "Two rule-violating oil tankers attempting to pass through the strait via unauthorized routes hit sea mines," adding, "One was located east of the Strait of Hormuz, and the other inside the strait."
The IRGC further stated that both tankers had turned off their navigation and identification systems and were attempting to exit the strait with the support of the U.S. military, and that they stopped operating after catching fire following the collisions with the mines.
Iranian media also reported the previous day that five oil tankers and one tugboat caught fire in similar accidents in the Strait of Hormuz.
However, AFP explained that there has been no confirmation from maritime authorities regarding any of the accidents over the two days.
Previously, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Brad Cooper stated on October 25, "The main shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz currently remain safe without Iranian sea mines."
Nevertheless, the IRGC has continued to claim multiple instances of oil tankers striking mines in the Strait of Hormuz since then.
