A man in his 40s has been caught by police on charges of driving an electric vehicle under the influence of alcohol, crashing into a first-floor restaurant in a commercial building, and fleeing the scene, leaving his car behind.
The Hanam Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced on November 5 that it has booked Mr. A without detention on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act.
Mr. A is suspected of driving his electric passenger vehicle directly into a ground-floor restaurant in Deokpung-dong, Hanam-si, at around 5:17 a.m. on November 5, and leaving the scene without taking any measures.
No casualties occurred as the incident took place during the early morning hours before the business opened, but the vehicle sped through the glass window, pushing deep into the interior of the store and damaging facilities.
It was determined that there were no passengers in the vehicle.
Police dispatched after receiving a report that a car had crashed into a commercial building identified Mr. A by finding his wallet and identification card inside the abandoned vehicle.
Proceeding to his residence, the police apprehended Mr. A at around 6:17 a.m., just one hour after the accident, as he was sleeping at home.
Mr. A reportedly sustained minor bruises from the impact of the crash and confessed to both drunk driving and the accident at the scene.
At the time of his apprehension, Mr. A's blood alcohol concentration was reportedly at a level subject to license revocation.
Considering the time gap between when Mr. A actually consumed alcohol and the time of the accident, the police plan to apply the Widmark formula based on CCTV footage from the drinking establishment to calculate his precise blood alcohol concentration at the time of driving, while investigating the specific circumstances of his drinking and driving route.
